Looking across at the little village square. In times gone by it was used for water collection and washing etc.

We were lucky enough to see Bern's emblem in the flesh. Just up the road from our hotel were the last remaining bear pits that are in use. Lovely couple in the enclosure intent on getting the fish from the frozen blocks of ice hanging from the trees.

The city of Bern is situated in the middle section of the river that bends around both sides of the city. This photo is taken from the main bridge into the old section of the city just next to the bear pits. Out hotel (cream and black with smoke coming out of chimney) can been seen at the right hand side of the lower bridge. This is actually a backpacker's hostel! Lovely restaurant and bar on the ground floor. Our own bathroom and tv - pure luxury! It started to snow when we were tasting beers at the bar before dinner.

After a lovely breakfast, with croissants, we headed into to town via the bridge. The streets are all cobble stoned and the shops are under the arched wide walkways under the buildings on either side of the streets. In this are of the old town there are actually 6km of shopping under the arches. Excellent idea as you can shop in any weather conditions!! Andrew, Alexandra and I are framing this fountain (one of many up and down these streets) perfectly for Jeffrey's photo.

Alexandra just loved the bears in the pit and was really excited to be able to cuddle one just a few streets on.

Great shot of the Cathedral in Bern. Everyone told me winter is a great time for renovations and not to disappoint most historic buildings are covered in scaffolding.

The old city centre can be seen looking across the river from a street higher up the hill from our hotel in Bern.
